Frequently Asked Questions

Sailboat

1 Can the Autotether be used with a diesel engine?
Yes. 1If it is a single or dual engine gas or diesel, we offer a standard equipment emergency stop switch (from Mercury Marine rated for outdoor exposure) that is very easy to install and works with our system. You can order the switch from our website under buy now.
2 What is your return policy?
We have a 30 day money back guarantee. If you would like to return your system, simply ship it back within that time frame to 3 Inspiration Lane, Unit B3, Chester, CT 06412. We will credit your credit card for the price of the system (excludes shipping and handling costs). We also have a 1 year limited warranty.
3 What if I have two kill switches?
We can sell you a kill switch and you just need to have the 2 engines wired into the single kill switch.
4 Will the FOBs work properly if kept in a pocket, or do they need to be clipped externally?
Yes, the FOBs (personal sensor) will work if kept in your pocket. But we recommend you where the FOB clipped to your side or on your PFD for optimal performance.
5 I threw my FOB (personal sensor) in a glass of water to test but the system did not trigger, is there something wrong?
No, nothing is wrong. The system is actually working as designed. When you put the sensor in a glass of water there is not enough water to absorb the signal. When you fall into a body of water such as lake, river, stream, ocean, there is plenty of water to cancel the signal as opposed to a glass. The system is designed to recognize the difference between falling into the water and getting washed over by a wave while driving. We do this with software so that you do not lose control of the boat in rough water. If you want to test in a bucket you need more than 8 gallons of water and hold the sensor so it doesn’t rest on the bottom of bucket.
6 Do the FOBs (sensors) only work by distance?
No, they work based on both distance and by submersion in a body of water. If you fall off your boat into the water it will be triggered when the sensor is submerged because communication between the host and the sensor has been lost. Please note: the sensor can be splashed by a wave and will not trigger, it must be submerged in a large body of water to activate the kill switch and shut off the motor.
7 Is the Autotether applicable to sailboats?
Yes, it is. We sell "the screamer" for sailboats or larger motorboats. It sounds a loud alarm (105 db) if someone wearing a sensor falls overboard into the water. In addition, it works if you are towing a dinghy because the systems also work based on distance. If the dinghy breaks loose the horn will sound when the dinghy is more than 100 feet from the boat.
8 I have a Evinrude motor, what clip do I order?
For Evinrude motors, select the OMC1 clip in the ordering section.
9 Your info on the web page shows the operation with a Yamaha plunger type kill switch. How does it work with the toggle switch on my Mercury Optimaxe`s?
Our product does work on a Mercury kill switch, we have a different clip that fits on the toggle switch and pulls the switch to the off position when activated.
10 Who do you use for shipping and how long will it take for me to get my order?
Orders are shipped out of the Chester, CT facility using Fedex Ground or US Postal Service. Once an order has been placed, it will take approximately 5-7 business days for you to receive your system.
11 Can I pick up my Autotether at your facility in Chester, CT?
Yes you can. In the checkout, select pick up as the shipping option and hit the “RECALCULATE” button, shipping costs will be $0 now. Next, click the check out button and finish your ordering. When the order is placed someone will call you with directions to our facility and to arrange a pick up time.
12 How do I install my Yamaha clip on the kill switch?
